Instruments & equipment that your child will need for lessons

Guitar - primary/junior school students

A nylon strung Spanish / Classical guitar is recommended to start with, and will be needed for Trinity Guildhall examinations. For most junior students (age 7 to 11) we recommend a 3/4 size guitar - we can supply these with a case for just £59.95.

Guitar - secondary school students

For senior students (year 7 upwards) we recommend a full size classical guitar to begin with, although other types of guitar (steel string acoustic or electric) can also be used. We can supply full size classical guitars with cases from just £74.50.

Piano - all ages

Students will need access to a piano or electronic keyboard with full size weighted keys to practise on. Piano lessons can only be provided in schools and venues where a piano is available for use.

Yamaha Clavinovas are ideal for home use if noise is an issue as you can turn the volume down!

Instruments and equipment that your child need will need for their lessons

All students will need an instrument to practise on at home and in most cases to take to the lessons too. Our recommendations are detailed on this page.

Drums - All ages

Students can begin their tuition without access to a full drum kit at home to practise on. However, they will need drum sticks, a metronome and a practice pad to use both at home and in lessons - we can supply these as a package for £34.95.

A drum kit will usually be available for use in lessons, and of course you should plan to invest in one for home practice at some point to enable your child to reap maximum benefit from the lessons.

However, when first getting started, useful practice can be carried out with a combination of using the practice pad, tapping hands on knees and feet on the floor, and using everyday items to form a makeshift drum kit.

Two Chair Drum Kit!!

You can use two chairs to provide a mock-up of the hi-hat, bass and snare drum of a real drum kit for practising simple beats.

Position one chair in front of the student with the seat facing towards them, with a practice pad on it. This is used as the snare drum.

Position the second chair just to the left of the first, with the seat facing away from the student - the top of this chair back is the hi-hat, and student simply taps their right foot on the floor as the bass drum. See picture below!

Please call us to enquire about the drum kits that we can supply.

Keyboard - all ages

Students will need a 5 octave keyboard with full size keys. We recommend Yamaha keyboards, which can be found with all the functions required to take children up to grade standard for around £100.

Students will normally take this keyboard with them to the lessons for their own use.
